New Zealand Journal of Ecology (1998) 22(2): 189-196 ©New Zealand Ecological Society limitation on the sustainability of pastoral land use in New Zealand and this issue has been heightened by recent resource management legislation (Blaschke et al., 1992). In contrast, there have been few investigations on the effects of forest removal on the New Zealand soil fauna (Yeates, 1991). Contraction in distributional range has been a presumptive consequence of deforestation for many soil invertebrates dependent on forest cover but data has been available for only a few taxa (eg., earthworms; Lee, 1959, 1961). Most conservation effort has focused on the flora and fauna of the remaining natural forest habitats, and as a consequence no information is available on loss of indigenous biodiversity associated with deforestation and establishment of agricultural practices. Following the conversion of forest land to pasture, several indigenous insects have become widespread and abundant in pastures. These include Costelytra zealandica (White), Pyronota festiva (F.), Odontria spp. (Scarabaeidae), Irenimus aequalis (Broun) (Curculionidae), Wiseana spp. (Hepialidae), and Persectania aversa (Walker) (Noctuidae). Their feeding can severely reduce the productive life of pasture. Remnant forest areas have been shown to be Introduction

Socioeconomic Impact Assessment of Deforestation of Hyrcanian Forests on Local Communities

The present study was conducted to assess socio-economic impacts of deforestation of Hyrcanian forests in two basins of Do-Hezar and Se-Hezar, northern Iran. To this end, changes in the forest area were detected over the period between 1990 and 2006 based on land use land cover maps derived from Landsat and IRS satellite images. The land use changes were investigated by enhancement of the image...

Land use impacts on surface water quality by statistical approaches

Surface waters are the most important economic resource for humans which provide water for agricultural, industrial and anthropogenic activities. Surface water quality plays vital role in protecting aquatic ecosystems. Unplanned urbanization, intense agricultural activities and deforestation are positively associated with carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous related water quality parameters. Multip...

Investigating and Assessing Soil's Texture and Density in Different Land Uses Via Google Earth Engine System

Introduction: Awareness of soil quality in agricultural lands and natural resources is essential to achieve maximum production and environmental sustainability. Although soil quality is not directly assessed, soil quality indicators are widely used today, including the physical indicators which are of great importance in measuring the soil quality, as they directly influence the plant growth an...

Risk assessment of hazardous impacts on urbanization and industrialization activities based upon toxic substances

A risk assessment study was conducted to predict the expected hazardous influence on the ecosystem resulted from urbanization and industrialization activities at Helwan area, Egypt. To achieve these goals, soils, plants and water samples were collected from Helwan area, and their total concentrations of inorganic contaminants (Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and organic pollutants; such...
